Top tips for an enjoyable Halloween

It’s October and this month sees the third biggest celebration in the UK – Halloween! As this celebration approaches, here are a few tips for staying safe with your pets.
Excitable children in scary costumes can be upsetting for dogs and cats. Do keep your dog on their lead whilst you are out walking with them and be aware that your dog may be frightened or get stressed with the trick-or-treating. It is a good idea to ask your dog to sit as they walk past.
Try to exercise your dog before trick-or-treaters come out to play and it gets dark! Excitable children and spooky Halloween costumes can be very intimidating to dogs.
Try to keep your cat indoors on the night.
A carved pumpkin can easily be knocked over by cats and dogs. Think about replacing the tea lights with a safer battery operated flame free light.
If you decide to dress your pet in a Halloween costume, do make sure that the clothing does not restrict their movement or prevents them from eating, drinking and going to the loo. If your pet does not like their outfit do remove it, immediately.
Try to keep you dog or cat in a separate room away from the front door during the trick-or-treating hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets and avoid bringing your dog to greet trick-or-treaters, you never know what spooky surprises are waiting to greet you and it may scare your dog or make them too excitable. And do try to keep your bowl of sweets away from your dog, they really are not very good for them! Keep some special doggy treats aside for your dog, for when it all calms down.
